Outline
This
day long water media painting class is ideal for beginners, teachers, therapists
and artists working in any medium who are seeking a fresh start. Whether your
work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods for evoking self-expression
through the transparent magic of water media painting will be appreciated. By
using a full range of non-traditional and experimental water media painting
techniques, we will encourage 'the inner artist' to see and create a personal
visual language. From the moment we wet our paper to the final sweep of form
and color, we will attempt to evoke the presence of each artist in his or her
work, discovering the personal palette of colors and shapes unique to each of
us. All levels of skill are welcome.
Class demonstration and discussion will include wetting the paper or canvas, color, brushwork, compositional energy, atmospheric effects, textual elegance, edge tinting, and the use of watercolor crayon and acrylic inks. In addition, we will experiment with the beauty of accidents, back-up puddles and color saturation. Innovative methods will build self-confidence and facilitate the spontaneity inherent in water media painting. We encourage our imagery to dance in a playful way. Wet- into- wet techniques will be emphasized. Instruction is individualized. Class size is limited to 8 participants.
A suggested art materials list, confirmation letter and directions to Studio on the Mesa in West Marin County (1-hour north of San Francisco along the Pacific coast) will be mailed to enrollees. Overnight accommodations available.
To enroll in a Water Media for Self-Expression class, simply mail a check made payable to Carol Duchamp in the amount of $95(or series discount) to the address below with a note containing class date, your address, phone number, email, skill level and what interested you about the class. Artist
Instructor
CAROL DUCHAMP, B.A., Otterbein College, Ohio,
M.A., University of Strasbourg, France, has been leading outdoor watercolor
painting classes in the U.S. and abroad for 20 years. Her teaching style encourages
experimentation and self-discovery in a supportive environment that nourishes
the intuitive power of self-expression. Her watercolors are rich in color, lushly
saturated and sensual in form and have been described as 'cosmic, flowing and
full of light." She has been showing her watercolor abstracts in and around
the San Francisco Bay area for more than 10 years at Commonweal, the Bolinas
Museum and Caffé Trieste among other locations. You may view selections
of her watercolor, acrylic and collage paintings on the gallery page of this
website. Carol has taught for City College of San Francisco (Continuing Ed),
University of California Santa Cruz & UCLA Extensions, Sun Valley Art Center,
Miraval Resorts, and Art Trek. She currently teachs at her Studio on the Mesa
in West Marin County, at College of Marin and for Art Trek.
News Flash: The Birth of Post-Watercolorism at Caffé Trieste!
In a remarkable, quiet corner of the sleepy jet set village
of Sausalito on the edge of the Golden Gate, the birth of a whole new movement
in art has announced herself in the name of Carol Duchamp, a rogue watercolorist
who has chosen for her venue the unlikely, but most popular café in the
city, Caffé Trieste, to reveal something like a dozen new masterpieces
of light and bathtub water technique.
In an era accustomed to saunas, jacuzzis and the realization that water is more precious than oil, Duchamp's watercolors may indeed prove to be the solution to Global Warming and ecological scarcity. Dipping her canvasses in the bathtub (filled), she has - in an instant - glorified sustainable painting by using the bath for multiple purposes: hygiene, pleasure, washing clothes, and -now- great art!
Such revolutions are rare in this age of redundancies and densities. But Duchamp has taken the metaphor of the bathtub - worked to death in Bonnard and Degas - to a new high, by actually incorporating the bathwater into the very texture of her cosmic consolations.

Comments
"I enjoyed myself so much last Saturday. Truth to tell, I was a little
apprehensive about painting with others. But it was wonderful. You really have
something special going, not the least of which is your ability to read your
students and help support us as we find our own way. Thank you very much!"
Susan (March, 2006)
"Hello
Carol,
Yet again I wish to thank- you for the marvelous classes! My daughter
called last night and we had a grand time talking about what I did under your
tutelage. You are the most gentle of teachers and I loved the way you
guided me.
On the inside of my computer armoire doors (white) I have posted five pieces
of art I have accomplished (practice pages, too) and I love having the feel
of them around me. I have the 'real' painting in the living room,
and the three little ones together on a table in my studio.
I so appreciate having some skills now to use to enjoy myself.
With deepest gratitude,
Peggy" (July 2009)
