Course Outline
This day long watercolor painting class is ideal for beginners, teachers, therapists and artists working in any medium who are seeking a fresh start. Whether your work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods for evoking self-expression through the transparent magic of watercolor will be appreciated. By using a full range of non-traditional and experimental watercolor painting techniques, we will encourage 'the inner artist' to see and create a personal visual language. From the moment we wet our paper to the final sweep of form and color, we will attempt to evoke the presence of each artist in his or her work, discovering the personal palette of colors and shapes unique to each of us. All levels of skill are welcome.

Class demonstration and discussion will include wetting the paper, color flooding and gradation, brushwork, edge tinting, and the use of watercolor crayon. Innovative methods will build self-confidence in this medium and facilitate the spontaneity inherent in watercolor painting. We encourage our imagery to dance in a playful way. Wet into wet will be emphasized in order to take advantage of watercolor's transparent magic. Instruction is individualized. Class size is limited to 6 participants. Early enrollment is suggested.

A suggested materials list, confirmation letter and directions to Studio on the Mesa in West Marin County (1-hour north of San Francisco along the Pacific coast) will be mailed to enrollees.

To enroll in a Watercolor for Self-Expression class, simply mail a check made payable to Carol Duchamp in the amount of $95 to the address below with a note containing class date, your address, phone number, email, skill level and what interested you about the class. If you are a practicing artist, please bring one or two samples of your work. Questions? Call 415 868 9558. Mail to Carol Duchamp, Art Trek, P.O. Box 1103, Bolinas, CA 94924. Watercolor Instructor
CAROL DUCHAMP, BA, Otterbein College, Ohio, M.A., University of Strasbourg, France, has been leading outdoor watercolor painting classes in the U.S. and abroad for 20 years. Her teaching style encourages experimentation and self-discovery in a supportive environment that nourishes the intuitive power of self-expression. Her own watercolors are rich in color, lushly saturated and sensual in form and have been described as 'cosmic, flowing and full of light." She has been showing her watercolor abstracts in and around the San Francisco Bay area for more than 10 years at Commonweal, the Bolinas Museum and Café Trieste among other locations. You may view selections of her watercolor paintings on the painting gallery page of this website. Carol teaches for City College of San Francisco (Continuing Ed), University of California Santa Cruz Extension, Art Trek and at her Studio on the Mesa in West Marin County.

Review
News Flash: The Birth of Post-Watercolorism at Caffé Trieste!

In a remarkable, quiet corner of the sleepy jet set village of Sausalito on the edge of the Golden Gate, the birth of a whole new movement in art has announced herself in the name of Carol Duchamp, a rogue watercolorist who has chosen for her venue the unlikely, but most popular café in the city, Caffé Trieste, to reveal something like a dozen new masterpieces of light and bathtub water technique.

In an era accustomed to saunas, jacuzzis and the realization that water is more precious than oil, Duchamp's watercolors may indeed prove to be the solution to Global Warming and ecological scarcity. Dipping her canvasses in the bathtub (filled), she has - in an instant - glorified sustainable painting by using the bath for multiple purposes: hygiene, pleasure, washing clothes, and -now- great art!

Such revolutions are rare in this age of redundancies and densities. But Duchamp has taken the metaphor of the bathtub - worked to death in Bonnard and Degas - to a new high, by actually incorporating the bathwater into the very texture of her cosmic consolations.

Student Comments
"I enjoyed myself so much last Saturday. Truth to tell, I was a little apprehensive about painting with others. But it was wonderful. You really have something special going, not the least of which is your ability to read your students and help support us as we find our own way. Thank you very much!" Susan (March, 2006)

"Thank you so much for the inspiring class! I enjoyed it so much and hope to come again in the future! I have been painting a lot since Saturday." Rachel (April, 2006)
