Watercolor Instructor
CAROL DUCHAMP, BA, Otterbein College, Ohio, M.A., University of Strasbourg, France, has been leading outdoor watercolor painting classes in the U.S. and abroad for 20 years. Her teaching style encourages experimentation and self-discovery in a supportive environment that nourishes the intuitive power of self-expression. Her own watercolors are rich in color, lushly saturated and sensual in form and have been described as 'cosmic, flowing and full of light." She has been showing her watercolor abstracts in and around the San Francisco Bay area for more than 10 years at Commonweal, the Bolinas Museum and Café Trieste among other locations. You may view selections of her watercolor paintings on the painting gallery page of this website. One of France's most beautiful regions, Dordogne embodies French country life at its most delightful. From the warm hospitality of its villages of golden stone to superb cuisine, this land of vineyards, castles, oak forests and medieval towns is sure to enchant and inspire. The verdant Vallée de la Vézere in Southwestern France shelters the greatest concentration of Upper Paleolithic art in the world. Witness 15,000 year old paintings of horses, bison and reindeer in the limestone caves of Lascaux II and Font-de-Gaume. Paint from life and/or the imagination as we enjoy the beauty of consummate French countryside. Lovely accommodations, garden visits and regional specialties enhance our journey. The opportunity to view the majestic paintings of our art ancestors is not to be missed. Enjoy local wines and cuisine, charming accommodations, fully equipped studio and fabulous plein air painting sites. Day 1, Depart San Francisco or hometown; Day 2, Arrive Paris and Sarlat; Day 3-10, classes and excursions; Day 11, at leisure; Day 12, Depart Sarlat and Paris / Arrive USA.

Classes
We will be traveling through the land where the first evidence of what we call art was discovered; the first evidence of humans giving voice to the mystery and beauty of being. This was our "first voice" and in this workshop the lessons will be weighted toward the exploration of our own "first voices". We will experiment with natural materials (charcoal, and earth pigments) and explore modern icons, the continuation of 30,000 years of symbolic thought. As part of the artistic process, we will experiment with letting go of the idea of the painting we want and paint directly from the inner voice. In the process, we will explore a full range of non-traditional watercolor techniques, the watercolor phenomenon itself.

Class demonstration and discussion will include wetting the paper, color flooding and gradation, brushwork, compositional energy, edge tinting, textual elegance and the use of watercolor crayon. Whether your work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods for exploring the poetic spontaneity of watercolor will be appreciated. Using a full range of wet-into-wet techniques, we will encourage the 'inner artist' to create a personal visual language, discovering the colors, shapes and subjects unique to each of us. Expressive, energy based methods for making art will be explored. Practices will include creating the illusion of texture, drawing into prepared surfaces, working directly with pigment and refining chance occurrences. Create a visual language that is uniquely yours and enjoy a fresh start in making art.

Six watercolor sketch and journaling classes will be held in the Marquesas during our stay in Atuona, Hiva and during excursions interwoven with the Aranui III ship activities. These classes create the groundwork for further painting and watercolor sketching on one's own. A non-traditional approach to small format watercolors will be explored. Students will experiment with backgrounds, collage and wet-into-wet watercolor techniques that build confidence and nurture self-expression. We will use Paul Gauguin's journal Noa Noa (the word for fragrance in Tahitian) and the copies of his paintings on view in Atuona for additional inspiration. Enjoy the sea breeze from the top floor of Gauguin's reconstructed bungalow where we will hold one of our classes. On going sharing and discussion of our paintings and journal work will take place in an ambiance of camaraderie among artists.

Class demonstration and discussion will include wetting the paper, color flooding and gradation, brushwork, atmospheric effects, compositional energy, edge tinting, textural elegance and the use ink and watercolor crayon.
