This 3-day painting experience brings you 18 hours of class time with group and individualized painting instruction at Studio on the Mesa in Bolinas, California. Renew your art spirit with color and wet-into-wet water media techniques that offer the amateur and professional painter the broadest expressive range. Day 1, Sept 4 will focus on the watercolor phenomenon. Day 2, Sept 5 moves into an exploration of fluid acrylics including acrylic inks on paper and/or raw and/or primed canvas. Day 3, Sept 6 is a mixed media class combining watercolor, fluid acrylic, image transfer and collage.

Beginning and continuing students are welcome to join for one, two or all three days. Gift Certificates are available.

Class demonstration and discussion will include wetting the paper or canvas, color, brushwork, compositional energy, edge shading, atmospheric effects, textual elegance and the use of watercolor crayon, acrylic inks, image transfer and polymer mediums for collage. Workshop fee of approximately $3450 includes Rome airport transfers, accommodations, meals, excursions and Mixed Media painting class with Carol Duchamp. Workshop fee does not include international airfare to Rome.

Enjoy a beautiful, relaxing and nurturing setting in the foothills of the Appennine mountains. Accommodations are in a tastefully restored 16th century monastery. The chapel has been transformed into a well lit studio. Delicious home-cooked local Italian specialities will whet our appetite and the local vino rosso will "make us strong" (according to the locals). Authentic medieval towns and villages dot the landscape. We will visit Terni, Spoleto, San Gemini, Narni and Assisi among others. Our wonderful ear to the ground hosts will keep us posted on local concerts and events. We will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in rural Italian culture and visit the museums of Perugia as well. Our host is a well-connected art history afficionado who will share his knowledge of art and nearby towns and villages with us .

CAROL DUCHAMP, BA, Otterbein College, Ohio, M.A., University of Strasbourg, France, has been leading outdoor painting classes in the U.S. and abroad for 20 years. Her teaching style encourages experimentation and self-discovery in a supportive environment that nourishes the intuitive power of self-expression. Her paintings are rich in color, lushly saturated and sensual in form and have been described as 'cosmic, flowing and full of light." She has been showing her watercolor abstracts in and around the San Francisco Bay area for more than 10 years at Commonweal, the Bolinas Museum, JFKU Gallery, Wilmer Gallery and Caffé Trieste among other locations. Carol has taught for University of California Santa Cruz and UCLA Extensions, Sun Valley Art Center, College of Marin and Art Trek. She currently teaches at her Studio on the Mesa in West Marin County, at College of Marin, UCLA Extension, and for Art Trek. Course Outline
Sunday half-day classes or 3-day Mixed Media Intensives are ideal for beginners, teachers, therapists and artists working in any medium who are seeking a fresh start. Whether your work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods for evoking self-expression through the transparent magic of watercolor will be appreciated. By using a full range of non-traditional and experimental watercolor (and/or fluid acrylic) painting techniques, we will encourage 'the inner artist' to see and create a personal visual language. From the moment we wet our paper to the final sweep of form and color, we will attempt to evoke the presence of each artist in his or her work, discovering the personal palette of colors and shapes unique to each of us. All levels of skill are welcome. Optional foray into painting with fluid acrylics on raw or primed canvas.

Class demonstrations and discussion will include wetting the paper or canvas, color, brushwork, edge tinting, compositional energy, atmospheric effects, textural elegance and the use of watercolor crayon and acrylic inks. Innovative methods will build self-confidence in water media techniques and facilitate the spontaneity inherent in water media painting. We encourage our imagery to dance in a playful way. Wet into wet will be emphasized in order to take advantage of the transparent magic possible in watercolor and acrylic painting. Instruction is individualized. Class size is limited to 8 participants. Early enrollment is suggested.

The 3-day intensive provides a skill building sequence that includes watercolor on day one, fluid acrylic and/or continued practice with watercolor on day two and optional addition of image transfer techniques on day three. Call for detials. Individual guidance from instructor.

Intuitive painting is a new concept to some and not to others. In these process-oriented classes, we will explore the mediums of watercolor and acrylic (optional) as a way to access and release our innermost creativity. We make the invisible visible (Paul Klee) through an art practice that combines skill building with the nurture of the intuitive power of expression. We consider subjective and objective reality in our art. We discover our personal, signature style of art making. Art as play, rhythm as composition, spontaneity as presence - these concepts and practices give a new and vibrant content to our paintings.

These classes are an excellent venue for anyone seeking enhanced creativity, self-expression through the visual arts or an infusion of vitality into current art practice. The Islands
The Polynesian Islands of Tahiti and Huahine are enchantment itself. Volcanic peaks rise above lush and rugged valleys; tropical fruit and flowers grow in abundance. White sand beaches, blue-green lagoons and exquisite sunsets add to our palette of colors. We journey to these islands to explore the beauty of the tropics and the watercolor phenomenon. Our odyssey begins on the idland of Tahiti where we visit the extensive Botanical Garden and adjacent Gauguin Museum.

Often called the garden isle. Huahine is home to fascinating archaeological sites and retains the best of old Polynesia. Delight in the beautiful smiles of local Polynesians. Enjoy the slower pace of island life, gardens full of exotic blooms and spacious Tahitian style bungalows. Paint daily, learn new skills and enjoy all the pleasures of island life. Swim, snorkel, paddle outrigger canoes and kayaks, and relax in this little bit of paradise. Tuck a sweet smelling Tiara Tahiti gardenia bud behind one ear, don a pareo (lenght of Polynesian cloth), and you are ready for the day! Friends, spouses and family members of workshop participants are welcome and may join the trip at the travel fee level.

CAROL DUCHAMP holds a B.A. in French and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Strasbourg, France. Her paintings are rich in color, lushly saturated and sensual in form and have been called "cosmic, flowing and full of light". Her deeply saturated color and organic forms lend themselves beautifully to a sense of place.
