Itinerary
Hui Ho'olana is a retreat center dedicated to creativity, healing and the arts.
Hui Ho'olana provides an ideal environment for inspiration and a safe haven
in which to nurture the creative spirit. Located on 100 acres on the island
of Molokai, the Center sits at 1300' on a hill called Pu'ukolea. Molokai offers
a taste of old Hawaii and the slower pace of island life. It is considered the
sacred island by locals and is a vestige of Polynesian cultural tradition. This
beautiful site offers everything we need to paint and relax, and perhaps take
a step back in time. Delicious "family style" vegetarian meals plus
fresh local fish are served daily. Day 1, Arrive Molokai/Orientation watercolor
painting class and welcome dinner; Day 2-5, Watercolor painting classes, optional
excursions and farewell art show and celebration of our work; Day 6, Wrap-up
painting class.

Classes/Watercolor
Painting for Self-Expression This art workshop is ideal for beginners,
teachers, therapists and artists working in any medium who are seeking a fresh
start. Whether your work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods
for evoking self-expression through the transparent magic of watercolor will
be appreciated. Using a full range of non-traditional watercolor painting techniques,
we will encourage 'the inner artist' to see and create a personal visual language.
Class demonstration and discussion will include wetting the paper, color and
pigment interaction, brushwork, edge shading, and the use of watercolor crayon.
From the moment we wet our paper to the final sweep of form and color, we will
attempt to evoke the presence of each artist in his or her work, discovering
the personal palette of colors and shapes unique to each of us. All levels of
watercolor painting skill are welcome, as are friends and spouses of art workshop
participants.
Instructor
CAROL DUCHAMP, BA, Otterbein College, Ohio, M.A., University of
Strasbourg, France, has been leading outdoor painting classes in the U.S. and
abroad for 20 years. Her teaching style encourages experimentation and self-discovery
in a supportive environment that nourishes the intuitive power of self-expression.
Her own watercolor abstracts are rich in color, lushly saturated and sensual
in form and have been described as 'cosmic, flowing and full of light."
She has been showing her watercolor abstracts in and around the San Francisco
Bay area for more than 10 years at Commonweal, the Bolinas Museum and Thomas
Schwarz Booksellers among other locations. You may view selections of her paintings
on the painting gallery page of this website.
