Day 1, July 27 Morning transfer from Rome airport to La Romita School of Art. Arrival lunch, rest and orientation.

Day 2-14, July 28-August 9 Daily painting class at chapel/studio and/or hilltown excursion for plein air painting or sightseeing to such local gems as Spoleto, Todi, Assisi, Orvieto Villa Lante & Perugia.

This workshop is ideal for beginners, teachers, therapists and artists working in any medium who are seeking a fresh start. Renew your art spirit with color and wet-into-wet water media techniques that offer the amateur and professional painter the broadest expressive range. Whether your work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods for evoking self-expression through the transparent magic of watercolor will be appreciated. Class builds on wet-into-wet watercolor techniques to include further exploration of fluid acrylic painting. Watercolororists are welcome to pursue their own body of work in the medium of watercolor only. Using a range of traditional and non-traditional painting techniques, we will encourage 'the inner artist' to see and create a personal visual language and record of this beautiful foray into authentic Italy.

Demonstrations and discussion will include wetting the paper or canvas, color and pigment interaction, brushwork, compositional energy, atmospheric effects, edge tinting, textual elegance, and the use of watercolor crayon, acrylic inks and image transfer. From the moment we wet our paper to the final sweep of form and color, we will attempt to evoke the presence of each artist in his or her work, discovering the personal palette of colors and shapes unique to each of us. All levels of skill are welcome, as are friends and spouses of workshop participants.

In 2010-2011 our water media and mixed media painting classes will take us to Bolinas, California (an hour north of San Francisco) for a schedule of 1/2-day Sunday classes from 11 AM to 3 PM and a 3-day weekend intensive over Labor Day Weekend Sept 4, 5 & 6, 2010. We are exited to be offering a 2-week painting class to Umbria, Italy July 27-August 10, 2011 at La Romita School of Art. Save the dates and plan ahead. This promises to be a superb workshop in the classic style of Art Trek.

Pending art exploratories will take us to Collioure, France on the Mediterranean Sea and to Languedoc/Roussillon, France 2012. Also pending is our Island Water Media class (a favorite) to Tahiti and Huahine Islands in French Polynesia. In addition to our well planned classes and excursions, lovely serendipitous events feed our art stream. There is nothing like an art adventure to renew your art and spirit! This half-day water media painting class is ideal for beginners, teachers, therapists and artists working in any medium who are seeking a fresh start. Whether your work moves in a realistic or abstract direction, class methods for evoking self-expression through the transparent magic of water media painting will be appreciated. By using a full range of non-traditional and experimental water media painting techniques, we will encourage 'the inner artist' to see and create a personal visual language. From the moment we wet our paper or canvas to the final sweep of form and color, we will attempt to evoke the presence of each artist in his or her work, discovering the personal palette of colors and shapes unique to each of us. All levels of skill are welcome.

Class demonstrations and discussion will include wetting the paper or canvas, color flooding and gradation, brushwork, edge tinting, compositional energy, atkmospheric and textural effects, and the use of watercolor crayon and acrylic inks. Innovative methods will build self-confidence and facilitate the spontaneity inherent in watermedia painting. We encourage our imagery to dance in a playful way. Wet into wet will be emphasized in order to take advantage of the transparent magic watercolor and fluid acrylic. Instruction is individualized. Studio class size is limited to 6 participants. Early enrollment is suggested.

This 3-day painting experience brings you 18 hours of class time with group and individualized painting instruction at Studio on the Mesa in Bolinas, California. Day 1, September 4 will focus on the watercolor phenomenon. Day 2, September 5 moves into an exploration of fluid acrylics. Day 3, September 6 is a mixed media class combining watercolor, fluid acrylic, image transfer and collage.

Picturesque and billed as the layed back St. Tropez of the Vermilion Coast, this small fishing village on the Mediterranean Sea just north of the Spanish border once hosted Fauve artists Henri Matisse and André Derain. Later Picasso and Braque enjoyed the matchless light on pastel hued houses and Collioure's famed wine and anchovies. Set against a dramatic backdrop of vineyards and the foothills of the Pyrenees, this gem of a village hosts a thriving art community.

Instructor
CAROL DUCHAMP holds a B.A. in French and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Strasbourg, France. Her paintings are rich in color, lushly saturated and sensual in form and have been called "cosmic, flowing and full of light". Artists interested in developing their own voice and visual language will benefit from Carol's expressive, energy based methods. Her deeply saturated color and organic forms lend themselves beautifully to a sense of place. Methods for exploring the illusion of texture, drawing into prepared surfaces, layering, working directly with pigment and refining chance occurrences will be explored.
